Hello hello!
Hello! I'm Yiru, a Thai freelance Illustrator & VTuber based in the UK!
The majority of my work has been commissions based, full-time since 2020, I have since worked with independent talent as well as various companies and agencies around the world as well such as VShojo (USA) & The Otaku Box (Japan). Now I design and create merch of my favourite creators, shows and games too!
My areas of expertise include: Illustrations, Character Concepts, Apparel & Merchandise design. My artwork & merch is themed around VTubers, streamers, games, anime and food! I'm a huge foodie so I like to combine my two loves for a unique take!
I have been tabling at conventions since 2023 and have done events all around the UK & EU, soon to be venturing to the US & SEA!
My Background
I was born and raised in England, United Kingdom to Thai immigrant parents, I grew up in an area with predominately English residents, so my exposure to Thai or any Asian culture was extremely limited. I watched Pokémon on TV, and DVDs of Thai translated versions of Doraemon, Shin-chan and Popeye that my family had bought me from Thailand, it wasn't until I discovered YouTube as a tween that I watched anime such as Naruto, Fairy Tail, Ouran High School Host Club etc!
I was always a more artistic & creative as a child but it was anime that started the real passion, I started drawing screenshots of anime, chibis and random doodles of my favourite characters until I made an Instagram account and found so many other amazing anime artists! From the age of 12, I started sharing my work online and made friends from all around the world who shared the same passions as I me, someone then asked if they could commission me, I didn't know what it meant at the time, so they explained it and thus I got my first ever commission!
It was amazing to me that I could create things that brought people such joy, to the point they wanted to pay me, a stranger they had never met. Growing up in an Asian household, I was always told that you couldn't make money from being an artist, I proved to my mum that I could after taking commissions and showing her the money in my Paypal account - she allowed me to pursue art in my education from then on!
Whilst I didn't finish college or attend university, art in education did teach me a few skills, the rest I have learnt from self teaching and the copious amounts of tutorials and teachings online, I'm nowhere near finished with my learning but I have learnt a great deal from the artist community and I hope to one day give back and teach other creatives who are trying to find their path in art & design.
In 2018, I also started streaming with a face cam alongside my art & games on Twitch, this was another fun way to connect with people and share my artwork and for commissioners to watch their commission be worked on live!
Later in 2022 designed my own VTuber model, commissioned another artist for the Live2D artwork and another artist for the rigging and have been down the VTuber rabbit hole ever since! I've made lifelong friends with people I've met through the streaming and online content industry.
During Covid in 2020, I was laid off from my corporate job, until this point I had only been doing commissions part time to make ends meet and to beef up my bank account. I found that given more time and nurturing a social media presence, I could make it into my full-time career, so I did! It was the best decision I had ever made!
However, after three years of doing non-stop commission work, I began to feel burnt out, I felt like a machine - churning out the same old day in and day out - something that is almost deadly to a creative, the feeling of stagnation and boredom.
I thought back to when I was younger and full of enthusiasm and motivation, drawing everyday for the heck of it!
So I thought back to the first time I went to a comic con, how happy I felt to be physically among people who loved the same things as I did, how in awe I felt of the artists in Artist Alley and how I wished to one day be one of them. So I thought, why not now?
I did the research, which is quite easy with how the internet is nowadays, and I tabled at my very first convention in 2023!
Since then, I've been obsessed with going to events, meeting likeminded passionate people and selling my artwork and seeing how happy people are walking away with the things I made! I had always enjoyed the people aspect of my previous jobs in hospitality, seeing your regulars, seeing people happy, so this feels like a combination of all the things I loved in life.
I'm also a HUGE foodie, which in Asian cultures, I feel like it's pretty easy to be. So now I do my best to combine all the things I love, into one! I pair my favourite characters with their canon foods (favourite or adjacent to their story) and share the fun trivia with my customers - (Did you know, Final Fantasy did a collaboration with Yokai Watch, and so we now know that milk is Cloud's favourite and Sephiroth's is pasta)!
Now, I work with companies and streamers whilst attending events & conventions with my merch, it has been exciting to travel the world and share my artwork and merchandise with all kinds of people and share in our passions!
It's been a truly amazing experience and I'm so happy I can do it as my full-time career!
